The painting is inspired by the first generation of women of the African diaspora to and within the Western culture. As many women that hold on to the culture, moral and values of their native culture, they found themselves at a clash with what was accepted in the Western culture. The coverage of the woman on the canvas symbolizes the protection that she carried as entered into new spaces.
The usage of an African based print as the background established that what will always be part of her. ‘No Guilt, Just Honor’ has the strong link to those that had to pay and sometimes disguise what was inherent to their identity in order to survive, knowing that they are protected by their cover and background.
